The Barn, at the Entrance to Arunah Hill, was built on a dry stacked stone foundation dating back to the mid 1700s. At that time the land was owned by the Tower's family for whom the Tower's trail is named. A barn was built on this foundation and was close to the original homestead.
Arunah Bartlett married into the Tower's family and came into ownership of the property in the early 1800s. At one point a severe winter storm struck, that dumped so much snow on the Berkshires that Arunah Bartlette could not even reach this barn from the house for nearly three days.
The barn collapsed or burned down near the turn of the century and the open foundation remained until Joe and Ernie Zuraw purchased the land in 1983. Between 1983 and 1985 a new barn was built on this foundation.
It was a low budget project that made extensive use of recycled wood and a minimum of new material. Using 2 wood burning stoves - donated by Dan Carnevale & Joe Zuraw - and standing two stories high with a cupola on top, it is currently used for storage and as a classroom during annual events such as Star Watch and Arunah Hill Days as well as other educational programs.
