Clearing the Observing Site - 1999

The Arunah Hill Summit has several areas where visitors can camp and observe on fairly level ground. Most areas are seeded and mowed throughout the warm months. Even for events like Arunah Hill Days, a large number of visitors can camp and play in relative harmony.

It took several years to carve the clearing out of the hilltop forest. Even after all that work, the Arunah Hill Summit was much different than today, with a rough terrain of tree stumps and relatively little level ground.  The final transformation to the Observing Site of today began with an agreement with the Massachusetts National Guard to clear and grade the site. Over several weekends during the Summer of 1999, heavy equipment transformed the rough hilltop into a landscape that could be seeded and maintained.
